3 FEATURES TO CONSIDER WHEN USING A SELF-CENTERING LATHE CHUCK

  1. GRIP The better the grip, the safer and faster a job can be completed.
  • There should be a minimum of 3 jaw teeth engaged on the scroll at any position of the chuck jaws
  • Grip depends upon the force transmitted to the jaws by the operation of the key through pinions and scroll.
  • Whether the scroll is ground (up to 315mm dia) or precision machined, there is as close as possible to maximum engagement between the scroll tooth and the jaw teeth.
  • The maximum RPM of the chuck is determined by the body material eg cast iron, SGiron or steel.  Recommended safe RPM is governed by standards din6386.1 and VDI3106ACCURACY Not all chucks have the same run-out accuracy.

       2. ACCURACY   Not all chucks have the same run-out accuracy

  • In a precision chuck the run-out accuracy does not exceed 40microns at any position on the scroll for sizes up to and including 315mm diameter chuck. For 400mm diameter chucks the run-out can be up to 75microns. For 500mm or 600mm diameter chucks the run-out is up to 100microns.

       3.  WEAR LIFE   Wear life is affected by the finish of the chuck-long wear life means lower overall costs.

  • Look for a ground and blemish free surface
  • The high precision of the State chuck is achieved by careful selection of material composition, accurate manufacture and proper heat treatment ensuring longer wear life.
